Across New Zealand, schools are rethinking the design and upkeep of their bathroom facilities. The focus is increasingly on creating washrooms that are clean, efficient, and sustainable, while also reducing long-term maintenance costs. This has led to a strong move away from paper towels and towards hand dryers, with the Supreme Airforce proving to be a popular choice.
From Tangiteroria School in Northland to Clutha Valley School in Otago, principals and boards are choosing to futureproof their facilities with hand dryers. Sacred Heart College in Hamilton recently installed Supreme Airforce dryers as part of a major upgrade, achieving reduced waste, lower running costs, and consistently clean washroom environments.
Schools are recognising the clear advantages:
Cleaner washrooms with no overflowing bins or paper towel litter
Improved hygiene thanks to touch-free operation
Fast 12-second drying time that keeps student flow moving
Low energy consumption for sustainable operation
Cost savings by eliminating ongoing paper towel supply and disposal
Reduced maintenance as towel-related blockages and clogs are eliminated
Durable, vandal-resistant design built for heavy school use
For school boards and architects, the numbers stack up. The initial investment in hand dryers quickly pays for itself compared to the ongoing cost of paper towels. We have an online calculator which allows you to do the math for your space. Beyond the savings, they ensure modern, hygienic, and efficient washrooms that meet the needs of today’s education environments.
280 Queen Street remains a confident example of late modernist architecture in Auckland’s CBD. The rhythmic white fins that rise along its Lorne Street façade and the slender T-shaped form facing Queen Street give it a quiet strength and timeless appeal. But the real transformation of this landmark is taking place inside.
In the years following the Covid-19 pandemic, our expectations of shared spaces have changed. Cleanliness, hands-free access and smart technology are no longer extras, they’re essential. At 280, touchless technology has been thoughtfully integrated to improve the day-to-day experience for tenants, staff and visitors.
The site connects Queen Street and Lorne Street with a well-activated pedestrian laneway, running through a vibrant podium of retail and hospitality. Above this, generous shared spaces, including a covered terrace, breakout zones, meeting rooms and what’s set to be Auckland’s largest open-air rooftop bar, offer a contemporary environment for work and social connection.
Across all of these spaces, a focus on low-contact interaction sets the tone. Building systems are designed to support better hygiene, smoother movement and a more user-friendly experience. At 280, Supreme Diamond-Vtitanium hand dryers are being installed as part of the commitment to touchless solutions. Fast, efficient and visually sharp, they align with the building’s modern palette while supporting better hygiene and reduced waste.
Simple touches like these make a real impact. It’s not just about products, it’s about designing commercial bathroom environments that feel responsive to how people want to live and work today.
Touchless technology is one of the quiet success stories of building design in recent years. At 280 Queen Street, it’s helping to lift the standard, making everyday interactions easier, cleaner and more intuitive. Combined with strong architecture and thoughtful amenity, it’s part of what makes this building more than just another commercial tower, it’s a sign of where smart building design is heading.

Welcome to Te Whare Whakatere in the heart of Ashburton, the town’s new library and civic centre, where culture, learning, and civic life converge under one roof.
Te Whare Whakatere is more than just a library; it’s a multifaceted hub designed to cater to the diverse needs of the community. From its extensive collection of books to its customer service counters, meeting rooms, events spaces, and even a café, this centre is a dynamic space for both leisure and productivity.
The building envelope showcases a blend of materials, including glazed curtain walls, glass fiber reinforced concrete slats, and metal cladding, creating a visually striking yet functional facade.
Energy efficiency is a priority at Te Whare Whakatere, with features such as heat pumps utilising water from artesian wells, a Building Management System for monitoring energy usage, solar shading, and an adaptive LED lighting system that adjusts according to occupancy and natural light levels.
Moreover, the project demonstrates a commitment to preserving heritage, with the careful preservation and strengthening of a red brick heritage building, Pioneer Hall. Nestled within a glass atrium, this historic gem adds a touch of nostalgia to the ultra-modern surroundings, bridging the past with the present.
One notable addition to this state-of-the-art facility is the integration of Supreme Airjet hand dryers in its public and staff amenities areas. With a robust construction, ensuring longevity even in high-traffic environments, this is a perfect addition to any public bathroom facility. Fast dry times and customisable sound/speed options provide flexibility for sound-sensitive areas, accommodating the diverse needs of a communal space such as this.
In the dynamic world of education, where every decision impacts both the student experience and the budget, the strategic move to swap traditional paper towels for high-speed hand dryers in school restrooms emerges as a winning formula. This transition not only bolsters hygiene practices but significantly slashes costs and propels schools into a more sustainable, environmentally conscious future.
The immediate cost benefits of this switch are impressive. High-speed hand dryers reduce the ongoing expense associated with purchasing and disposing of paper towels, offering schools substantial savings of up to 99% per annum (excluding the initial investment).
Beyond the financial gains, these dryers are a game-changer in terms of environmental responsibility. The elimination of paper waste contributes to a remarkable 90% reduction in CO2 emissions, aligning with schools’ commitments to sustainability and responsible resource management.
The negative impacts of paper towels in school environments are far-reaching. The constant need for replenishing dispensers and disposing of paper waste not only incurs ongoing expenses but also demands a considerable investment of time and effort from custodial staff. Moreover, the mess left behind from discarded paper towels can create an unsightly and unhygienic restroom environment, impacting the overall cleanliness of the school. In addition, the misuse of paper towels, including attempts to flush them down toilets, often leads to plumbing issues and blockages, further adding to maintenance headaches and costs.
The environmental impact of paper towels goes beyond their immediate use in restrooms. The production of paper towels involves the consumption of natural resources, such as trees and water, contributing to deforestation and water usage. Furthermore, the manufacturing process often involves the use of energy and chemicals, which can result in additional environmental pollutants.
Disposal of used paper towels poses its own set of challenges. When paper towels end up in landfills, they contribute to the overall waste accumulation and take a considerable amount of time to decompose. This decomposition process releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
By transitioning to high-speed hand dryers, schools not only address the immediate issues related to cleanliness and costs but also take a significant step towards reducing their overall environmental footprint. This shift aligns with the growing awareness of the importance of sustainable practices, contributing to a greener and more eco-friendly educational environment.
By making the switch to high-speed hand dryers, schools not only alleviate these logistical challenges but also pave the way for a cost-effective, eco-smart campus that prioritises hygiene, efficiency, and sustainability.

In bringing to life a vision of a mana-enhancing campus, the University of Waikato has unveiled The Pā, a stunning architectural marvel that stands as a testament to the institution’s dedication to its students, staff, and future generations. Designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday campus life, The Pā places the wharenui at its core, drawing inspiration from the intricately carved maihi of the whare’s exterior to shape the building’s majestic form. This unique complex consolidates key university functions under one roof, symbolising a commitment to unity and cultural significance.
The significance of The Pā extends beyond its aesthetic appeal, serving as a dynamic hub for university activities. Housing the Senior Leadership Team’s offices, a new reception area, and becoming the new home for Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao, the Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies, The Pā stands as a versatile space for teaching, learning, and communal gatherings. The collaborative efforts of renowned architectural firms Jasmax, Architectus, and DesignTribe have successfully translated the university’s vision into a groundbreaking 7000-square-meter structure, marking a milestone in New Zealand’s architectural history.
At the heart of The Pā’s innovation lies its use of structural timber, specifically engineered wooden glulam beams. This material, relatively new in New Zealand’s commercial construction scene, frames the building’s roofline, giving it a distinctive whakaruruhau (shelter from the wind). The project not only showcases the beauty and versatility of structural timber but also aligns with the global shift towards sustainable and low-carbon construction practices. The exposed glulam beams, extending from the wharenui’s maihi, contribute to the building’s identity, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity in this architectural masterpiece.
As The Pā becomes a central hub for university life, the inclusion of Supreme hand dryers reflects a dedication to quality and efficiency, seamlessly integrating future-proof, reliable amenities into this visionary space.

A state-of-the-art service hub spanning 783 square meters is taking shape in Frankton’s Remarkables Park, heralding a new era for the Salvation Army’s operations. This purpose-built facility is designed to house all Salvation Army services on the ground floor, with collaborating social services on the first floor, alongside a well-equipped auditorium.
Reflecting on the pre-Covid landscape, Mat Begg, the Trust grant manager, revealed that Queenstown’s Salvation Army was already grappling a staggering 300% increase in demand . This surge introduced hundreds of individuals to Salvation Army services for the first time. Begg emphasised that the new facility is a strategic move to streamline service delivery, addressing challenges such as exorbitant rents and inadequate facilities in the region.
With an eye on community needs, Frankton was chosen as the hub’s location to ensure proximity to families already receiving support. The hub aims to simplify access by consolidating all services under one roof. The building will host all the Salvation Army’s community services, including social workers, counsellors, migrant support counsellors, and financial mentors. It will also house Frankton’s very first and much-needed food bank.
The comprehensive hub features not only an auditorium but also offices, multipurpose rooms, and a Salvation Army family store. The family store serves a dual purpose by contributing to the building’s maintenance costs and providing essential items like clothing and bedding to clients in need.
Elevating the bathroom experience at the facility is the addition of the Supreme Diamond-V hand dryer, a good looking hand dryer that brings a touch of glamour to this essential space. This sleek and energy efficient hand dryer is designed to deliver high-speed warm air, ensuring a quick and economical hand-drying experience.

A1, the upcoming focal point for Health Sciences at AUT’s North Campus, is poised to be a transformative force in both architecture and sustainability. The building’s distinctive saw-tooth façade ingeniously blocks direct sunlight from the north and west, while south-facing glazing harnesses dispersed natural light, minimising solar heat gain. This architectural ingenuity is fundamental to the high-performance building envelope, enabling A1 to operate efficiently with minimal cooling needs.
Scheduled for completion in 2024, the A1 Building employs an innovative, low-energy displacement system that plays a pivotal role in achieving the ambitious target of less than 60kW.hr/m²/yr of operational energy usage. This system introduces cool, fresh air at lower levels, allowing it to rise gradually as it warms. The warmed air is then extracted at roof level, effectively lifting heat and pollutants away from occupants. A testament to AUT’s commitment to sustainability, the A1 Building exemplifies how sustainable design principles can create spaces that prioritise both environmental impact and student well-being.
The choice of displacement ventilation, tailored to Auckland’s temperate climate, underlines AUT’s dedication to context-specific solutions. As the University of a Changing World, A1 stands as a symbol of innovation and sustainability, embodying a harmonious blend of architectural brilliance and environmental consciousness. The A1 Building not only redefines the campus landscape but also sets a new standard for responsible and student-centric design in higher education.

In the ongoing battle to reduce our environmental footprint, even small decisions can have a significant impact. When it comes to the seemingly mundane choice between hand dryers and paper towels in public restrooms, the implications for our planet are far from trivial. While both options serve the same purpose, the environmental consequences of choosing one over the other are substantial. In this blog, we will explore the debate between high-speed hand dryers and paper towels, making a case for the former as the preferred choice due to its positive environmental impact.
The Environmental Impact of Paper Towels
1. Deforestation: The production of paper towels is a resource-intensive process that often involves cutting down forests, contributing to deforestation. This practice harms biodiversity, disrupts ecosystems, and releases significant carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
2. Energy and Water Usage: The manufacturing of paper towels requires vast amounts of energy and water. The process involves pulping, bleaching, and drying, which collectively consume valuable natural resources.
3. Transportation: Paper towels are heavy and bulky, leading to higher transportation emissions as they are shipped to various locations. This results in additional greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.
4. Waste Generation: After their brief use, paper towels end up as waste in landfills. These paper products do not decompose quickly, adding to the already pressing issue of overflowing landfills. Just check out this mess left behind in a school bathroom…yuck!
High-Speed Hand Dryers: The Eco-Friendly Choice
1. Energy Efficiency: High-speed hand dryers are far more energy-efficient than paper towels. They use advanced technology to blast air onto your hands, drying them quickly without the need for excessive energy consumption.
2. Reduced Waste: Hand dryers significantly reduce the amount of waste generated in restrooms. Unlike paper towels, which are single-use and quickly discarded, hand dryers can last for years with proper maintenance and spare parts are usually available to keep them going.
3. Lower Carbon Footprint: High-speed hand dryers have a smaller carbon footprint compared to paper towels due to their energy efficiency and reduced waste. This makes them a more sustainable choice for businesses and public facilities looking to minimise their environmental impact.
4. Cost Savings: While the initial investment in high-speed hand dryers may be higher than purchasing paper towels, businesses can save money in the long run by reducing their ongoing paper towel expenses and cleaning, maintenance and disposal costs.
5. Improved Hygiene: Hand dryers are a more hygienic option, as they eliminate the risk of touching contaminated surfaces when using paper towels. This is especially important in maintaining public health, particularly in restrooms.
Addressing Concerns about Hand Dryers
Critics of high-speed hand dryers often cite noise levels and concerns about potential bacteria dispersal. However, modern hand dryers have made significant advancements in noise reduction and hygiene features. Many models now come equipped with HEPA filters and UV-C sterilisation to purify the air and antimicrobial surfaces to inhibit bacterial growth.
So which is better, Paper Towels or Hand Dryers?
In the battle between high-speed hand dryers and paper towels, the choice is clear from an environmental perspective. High-speed hand dryers are the preferred option due to their reduced environmental impact, energy efficiency, and waste reduction benefits. While both options serve the purpose of drying hands, the long-term consequences of our choices can significantly impact the planet. By opting for high-speed hand dryers in public restrooms, businesses and individuals can contribute to a more sustainable future, one restroom visit at a time. If you are considering hand dryers, read this article about what is the best hand dryer for your project.
