Christchurch Airport
Hierarchy Group
2024
The recently completed amenities redevelopment at Christchurch Airport demonstrates how well-executed design can elevate everyday functional spaces into environments that not only perform efficiently but also enrich the passenger journey.
With Hierarchy Group as the driving force on this project, the previously dated washroom facilities were relocated and expanded within the International Departures Lounge. The brief centred on creating modern, welcoming spaces using durable materials and premium fittings capable of performing in one of New Zealand’s busiest airports.
Resilient materials and thoughtfully specified fittings provide longevity without compromising aesthetics, while carefully considered lighting enhances the sense of openness throughout the space. Large-scale photography murals by renowned photographer John Doogan, celebrating the landscapes of the South Island, create a strong sense of place and elevate what was once an unremarkable space into a more engaging environment.
Beyond the visual impact, the redevelopment responds directly to passenger demand, with the redesigned layout more than doubling toilet capacity to improve comfort and reduce congestion. New all-gender facilities support a more inclusive travel experience, while fully equipped parent rooms provide feeding areas, changing facilities, microwaves, junior toilets and interactive play spaces designed around the needs of travelling families.
In a busy international airport, hygiene and efficiency are non-negotiable. By specifying sensor taps, automatic soap dispensers and touch-free Supreme Airjet hand dryers throughout the washrooms, Christchurch Airport has created a cleaner, safer and more efficient environment.
